MEDALS FOR MINUTES Reading Award Program for Students
Establishing Lifetime Reading Habits
Establishing Lifetime Reading Habits
Medals for Minutes reading program is a school-wide reading competition that encourages readers at all levels to set aside time in their busy schedules to grab a book, dive into their imaginations, and discover the joy of reading for pleasure.
Academic performance is closely related to reading performance.
Students who read independently become better readers and score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas.
PTA volunteers run a 4-month-long reading metals reward for astudents contest and offer reward-based incentives for children who read in increments of 1,600 minutes or more.
Primary and Elementary Grades 1–5 are critical periods in the development of reading skills and in the formation of lifelong reading habits.
Research indicates that many students do not choose to read often or in great quantities. From a study of fifth graders, research showed only 5.4 percent of students choose to look at a book during their out of school time.
The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency and general information.
A single summer activity that is most strongly and consistently related to summer learning is reading.
Public libraries could sponsor this program with donated funds from a corporation and run an 8-week summer program to encourage summer reading and corresponding Medals for Minutes rewards and incentives.
